THE PRACTICE

Dr. Strahan was born in western Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma for both undergraduate work and medical school. He graduated in the top 10% of his medical school class and during a medical school maintained research fellowships in both the Department of Pathology in the Department of Surgery. For this, he was awarded the coveted Outstanding Research Achievement Award at graduation ceremonies.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Strahan  completed his internship and one year of residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver Colorado. Most of his years in post medical school training were spent in at the prestigious Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, California. It was here that Dr. Strahan first developed an interest in plastic surgery centering about the face.  During his tenure at Stanford, Dr. Strahan made a presentation at a national meeting concerning congenital problems in infants and was the co-producer of three scientific films.

After he finished at his residency training at Stanford, Dr. Strahan became the director of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery at Harbor General - UCLA Hospital in Torrance, California and served as an Assistant Professor or Surgery at UCLA for three years.  After this, Dr. Strahan entered private practice on the west side of Los Angeles and today continues to practice in Santa Monica, California.  While at UCLA, Dr. Strahan received the honored Ignacia Barraquear Awarded of Cinematography and Medicine from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery as well as making many presentations to national organizations and writing chapters in several books as an invited author.

In addition to publishing articles in the Journal of Urology, American Journal of Surgery, Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Archives of Neurology, Laryngoscope, Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Face and Cosmetic Surgery Times, Dr. Strahan has contributed to books about the surgical repair of cleft lips and palates, the treatment of hypertrophic and the keloid scars, the technique of small incision forehead lifts, cosmetic surgery of the nose and  many other topics having to do with cosmetic surgery.

Doctor Strahan has belonged to more than ten professional organizations and supported their function by serving on numerous committees.  He only remains active in the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.  Although Dr. Strahan was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the past, presently he only remains certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, the national board for which he helped write and administer the test for certification.

During the years of private practice, Dr. Strahan has asked on more than thirty occasions to present his work at many national and international meetings on many different topics including facial nerve reconstruction, microvascular techniques in head and neck reconstructive surgery, mandibular reconstruction, augmentation in rhinoplasty surgery, setting up a plastic surgery office, regular facelift techniques, deep plane facelift techniques, forehead lifts, laser resurfacing, cosmetic blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty in the ethnic groups and most recently served as an instructor of a course about cosmetic nasal surgery at the Orbitofacial Fellowship Program at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a course about cosmetic eyelid surgery accredited by the same university. He was also an invited speaker at the most recent meeting of the American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery.  He has been the invited speaker at several teaching programs including Stanford Medical Center, University of Chicago Medical School, University of Colorado Medical Center, University of Southern California School of Dentistry, and Northwestern University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Strahan’s most recent awards are: Children Needing a Chance Award from the March of Dimes National Birth Defects Foundation; the President’s Award for Service (2004) by the Union Rescue Mission of Los Angeles; and the 2003 Physician of the Year Award from a national political organization.

Despite his commitment to his patients, Dr. Strahan finds time for his other passions:  teaching and humanitarian efforts.  Dr. Strahan has been selected as a Special Consultant to teach advanced techniques to physicians in training at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, selected “America’s Best Medical Care” (U.S. News & World Report, July 18, 2005).

Dr. Strahan and his wife, Merry, founded the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute and Surgery Program (CRISP Foundation) in 1997.  They have been organizing medical-surgical teams to provide surgical care to the underprivileged children of Third World Countries such as the Philippine Islands, Mexico, Pakistan, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.  These teams have performed thousands of operations for children, the most common of which is repair of cleft lips and cleft palates.

Locally, Dr. Strahan and his wife are active members of Bel-Air Presbyterian Church and Dr. Strahan also serves as the Volunteer Director of Heath Services at the Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles.
